Fall 2018: Asian sci-fi & fantasy releases to fall in love with

I’ll be honest with you, guys. I was born, raised, and still currently reside in the Philippines, which only has two seasons: really wet and really dry (Speaking of, another huge typhoon just hit the country – what else is new, really – and I’m hoping everyone was safe and unharmed). Having never experienced fall, winter, or even spring, I had to ✨ Google search ✨ my way into figuring out what months of the year comprise the fall season.

According to Google, falls begins on the first day of September and lasts until the last day of November – so that’s the timeframe I’m working with. If I’m wrong and Google has betrayed me without my knowledge, feel free to correct me!

Anyway, for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, the prompt is ‘Books on My Fall 2018 TBR’. I recently discussed why I’m not the type to make TBR posts, and if you read that post, you would understand why I’ve decided to share science fiction and fantasy releases from Asian authors that will be (or have already been) released in Fall 2018.

At this point, you should all know that while I’m all about diverse books, books with Asian representation (i.e. Asian authors, Asian characters, Asian influences) occupy a special space in my Southeast Asian heart, and therefore, I’m a whole lot more vocal about supporting them (call it bias, if you will). I am extremely excited to share a dozen of shiny and pretty Asian releases with all of you!

Quick guide:
🌷 I already have a copy/ARC/pre-order of this book.
🌼 I’m extra excited for this book.
🌻 I have already read and would personally recommend this book.

This post contains affiliate links, which means that if you purchase the book using them, I will receive a small commission at no additional cost to you! It would mean the world to me if you would support my work through my affiliate links.

Revision [18 Sept 2018]:
This list initially included As She Ascends by Jodi Meadow (Amazon | Book Depository | Goodreads). However, although As She Ascends is one of my anticipated releases, it does not have Asian representation and Jodi Meadow is a white author. I worked on this post in between my study breaks, which may have been why I made such a careless error. As She Ascends has been duly removed from the list.

  1. Wonderful list! A couple of these are already on my TBR. Because I’m a huge fan of Julie Kagawa, I’m personally really excited for Shadow of the Fox. But I’ve also had my eye on Girls of Paper and Fire for a bit. The cover and the synopsis already have me sold. Will have to add the others to my to-read list! Thanks so much for sharing this 😀

  2. Julie Kagawa so far has been either miss or just okay for me and yet her books always draw me. It is the covers I tell you (plus she seems like a lovely person). But I’ve been hearing good things about Shadow of the Fox again so I’m probably going to get it from the library at some point.
So curious For a Muse of Fire, and I really need to get A Forest of a Thousand Lanterns.

  3. As a person who lives in Japan and has been studying Japanese for the past 10 years, it always makes my heart soar to see Japanese representation in books! I’m super excited that there are so many coming out soon! Thanks for this wonderful post 🙂

  4. Whoa, all these book covers are so gorgeous! I’m not really a sci-fi person, but I’m really excited for a lot of the fantasies on here! (Shadow of the Fox, Empire of Sand, Girls of Paper and Fire, and Empress of Seasons)
Hope you enjoy all these books when they release!

  5. OMG I love your list and was super excited when I saw the title of the post, haha. (Okay, but I’m also Asian so maybe I’m biased too???) This is a phenomenal list, Shealea, with amazing picks. 11/10 would also shove it at everyone else. 😅 (Still need to get started with Shadow of the Fox though… oops.)

  6. This is such a wonderful list, thank you for taking the time to put this together ❤ I am very excited about Girls of Paper and Fire, I've been hearing incredible things about this book so far. I'm also very curious to read The Reader's series, I haven't started it just yet but it sounds amazing, I feel like I'll love it. The Storyteller cover is absolutely stunning ❤ Oh and For A Muse of Fire sounds so cool, too! SO many good books, haha 🙂

    1. I really cannot recommend Girls of Paper and Fire enough! The Sapphic romance made me feel very soft and fragile. 💖

And I agree. There’s a ton of releases from Asian authors that should be hyped up! I had a hard time narrowing them down to an 11-item list. 🌷

    1. I just finished Shadow of the Fox last weekend, and it’s definitely something to feel excited about! I’ve been a huge fan of hers since I was in high school, and it’s great that there are more books from her. Plus, there will also be more books in The Iron Fey!!! I’m hyped.

  7. This is a great list! I hadn’t heard of most of these, but I really want to read more books by Asian authors because in Australia (where I’m from) we have a really large Asian population and I feel honor bound to support them.

  8. Thanks so much for sharing this list! I’ve been seeking out more Asian and African-inspired fantasy, so I’ll be bookmarking this list. I love the sound of Empress of All Seasons!

  9. I’m excited for soooooooooo many of these books! 😀 Especially Empress of All Seasons, Girls of Paper and Fire, which I was lucky enough to get an ARC of, and Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix, which I’d forgotten was being released soon! Do you happen to know when Empire of Sand is coming out? That’s another one I’m really keen to read, but I don’t have the release date for it. Amazing post Shealea!

    1. Go and read Girls of Paper and Fire!!! I really loved it, and the Sapphic romance had me feeling soft and fragile. 😭💖

If I recall correctly, Empire of Sand will be out around the second week of November! I’m pretty hyped up for that one, too.

        1. I’m happy to hear that! God, I’d love to get an ARC of Empire of Sand, too, but I know the odds are stacked waaaay against my favor so I don’t think I’ll even try. Good luck if you decide to go for it, though!

    1. Aaaaaah, it actually fills my little Southeast Asian heart with joy that I was able to put together an 11-item list! 💕 There are actually a few more, but I decided to feature the ones I’m most excited for (which was, I assure you, a huge struggle!). YAY FOR ASIAN REP. 🌟🌟🌟

    1. Yeah, I am. Where are you from? 😊 I haven’t read the first book, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, yet but I think I should bump it up my TBR just because the sequel is receiving a lot of hype. 😂🌷

  10. I’m not really big into fantasy and sci-fi (I love them, don’t get me wrong, but they’re not necessarily my go-to genres), but I do get interested checking a few titles under these genres to see if there’s something that I’m interested in. And I totally get what you mean about getting more excited for Asian rep books. They’re also closer to home for me!! Great list, btw. I will keep in mind of these titles, should I actually buy something soon (I have to really force myself to stop buying books because damn, it’s not healthy anymore 😂).

    1. Ooh, well, I’ve hit a contemporary slump so I’ve been gobbling up fantasy books left and right. 😂 I’m currently working on a list of 2018 and 2019 Asian contemporaries (i.e. contemporary novels with Asian MCs). Maybe that’ll be more helpful to you!

AND YES ASIAN REP IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING TO BE EXCITED ABOUT!!! ❤

    1. Aaaaah, awesome! And same here. Julie’s been my favorite author since I was in high school. 🌷 The Iron Fey is still one of my all-time fave fantasy series. I’m glad to find another fellow fan! ❤

    1. I just have a pre-order of it. *cries* But yaaas, I’m extra excited for its release!

I recently received a copy of FOTL as a birthday gift, so I’ll have to dive into it first before I get swept up in the Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix hype. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this one, though!

    1. I just finished reading my ARC of Shadow of the Fox over the weekend! It’s a breath of fresh air in the YA fantasy genre, imo. I hope you enjoy the book (as much as I did!) when you finally get to it.
