Poetic Attempt || Twenty-one (First of Her Name, Breaker of Norms)

There exists no greater art than wreckage you leave behind;
You create constellations at will, you set fire to skies.
(Rejoice, love! For you are woman redefined.)

Men seek to excavate treasure between your thighs yet
Your legs spread, giving birth to them. Oh, can’t they realize?
There exists no greater art than wreckage you leave behind.

No sculptor can reconstruct the way your soul curves,
And no painter can capture the brilliance in your eyes.
(Rejoice, love! For you are woman redefined.)

You are a tapestry weaved from sunflowers and raging seas.
Your voice shatters glass ceilings, do not apologize;
There exists no greater art than wreckage you leave behind.
(Rejoice, love! For you are woman redefined.)

Twenty-one
Alternatively: First of Her Name, Breaker of Norms
(Written on 25 March 2017)

* A little note:

First of Her Name, Breaker of Norms is actually a piece that I wrote as a submission for an online poetry-writing competition called Sandaang Salita Mula kay Leona, which translates to β€œ100 words from Leona”. The event is organized by the UP Sigma Alpha Nu Sorority. For this year, the theme was β€œBabae, paano ka nagtatagumpay?” (translation: β€œWoman, how do you triumph?”). I mentioned my intention of participating in an earlier blog post.

The contest winners were announced last March 31st, and my work placed first runner-up(!!!). Additionally, I was fortunate enough to receive the People’s Choice Award. You can view the other winners and awards on this Facebook page.

  1. I enjoyed this piece immensely, the power of a woman, scary stuff! πŸ˜‰
    I especially enjoyed this line: “You are a tapestry weaved from sunflowers and raging seas” I really connected it with my experience and I think it captures the duality that is inherent here.

  3. THIS POEM IS SO HEART TOUCHING! Don’t you feel insecure about putting all of your beautiful poetry out in the world, Shealea! You write BEAUTIFULLY and that’s a talent which is not bestowed upon many! I’m hoping to read your own book of poetry some day. πŸ’›πŸ’›

    1. I’m hoping to stop being lazy for a period of time that’s enough to write a book’s worth of poetry. πŸ˜‚ I’m already falling behind on my New Year’s resolution.

      But anyway. Thank you as always for the undeserved praise, Anj! You always make my day. πŸŒ»πŸ’•
